NAVA Contemporary is pleased to present, There Goes the Sun, a new online exhibition of artwork by Liv Dockerty.
Inspired by the ever-changing clouds at sunrise and sunset, Liv Dockerty's paintings capture how these forms and colors can transform in an instant. Although often overlooked, clouds are a constant yet everchanging phenomenon. So much so that "not a cloud in the sky" is an atmospheric condition worthy of refrain. Dockerty explores this omnipresent force in our lives by seeking to pause the constant motion within our skies. "In an instant, clouds in the sky may be a luminous peach, but before you even realize it, they are back to grey" notes Dockerty. Through her art she allows the viewer to take their time and experience the often-fleeting display above us, imbuing a sense of magic and calm.
Dockerty employs the use of color-shifting iridescent paints within her canvases, providing the appearance of clouds evolving through time. In If All I Have is the Light in Your Eyes, pink clouds appear to hover over a candy ombre sky shifting from orange to blue. Subtle contrails appear giving the impression that this image is not static, the human experience is present in more ways than one. Though semi-abstract in composition, Dockerty's paintings are rich in content. Their associative titles, often referencing Classic Rock song lyrics, evoke narratives and emotions, while her bold palette invites the viewer to indulge in the pleasure of a dreamlike state.
Liv Dockerty lives and works in Miami, Florida. She holds a BFA from Parsons the New School for Design, New York, New York. Dockerty’s work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Austin, Miami and Doha, Qatar. In 2018 she created the LIV Gallery, a temporary exhibition space to showcase her artwork. She has had a solo exhibition at the Coral Gables Museum in Florida, was included in Locust Projects’ Smash and Grab and was the Artist in Residence at the Epic Hotel during the 2023 Miami Art week.
