Lisa Hochstein’s fascination with contemporary architecture began decades ago when she first encountered the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. This poured-concrete building in the brutalist style appealed to her both as a monumental sculpture and as a place that asserted its presence and purpose. Hochstein fell in love with its surfaces, angles, and imposing weightiness, and spent countless hours photographing and drawing it.

Over the years and in a range of media, Hochstein has continued to reference architectural structures while exploring the potency of found material and the interplay between reduced and complex visual vocabularies. Her work ranges from dense, intensively labored collages to constructions that minimally alter the salvaged remnants of everyday life.
